Jennifer Senior: For parents, happiness is a very high bar
The parenting section of the bookstore is overwhelming—it's "a giant, candy-colored monument to our collective panic," as writer Jennifer Senior puts it. Why is parenthood filled with so much anxiety? Because the goal of modern, middle-class parents—to raise happy children—is so elusive. In this honest talk, she offers some kinder and more achievable aims.

In which John Green teaches you about the poetry of Langston Hughes. Langston Hughes was a poet and playwright in the first half of the 20th century, and he was involved in the Harlem Renaissance, which was a cultural movement among African Americans of the time that produced all kinds of great works in literature, poetry, painting, sculpture, music, and other areas. The Harlem Renaissance mainly happened in Harlem, the traditionally black neighborhood in upper Manhattan in New York City. Langston Hughes was primarily known as a poet, but he was involved deeply in the movement itself as well. John will teach you a bit about Hughes's background, and he'll examine a few of his best known poems.

Stories about punk music tend to picture thin-framed white guys and girls with shaved heads, part of an angry, energetic scene born out of the working class angst of young white England in the 1970s. But the actual history of punk – as a type of music and movement – is more complicated than that.
Black punks have been an integral and pioneering part of punk history – and they're keeping the movement alive and growing today. Host Sana Saeed explores that history and talks to proto-punk band Death, musician and journalist Greg Tate, the band The 1865 and festival organizer Shawna Shawnté.

Chickens have a great ability to keep their heads stable. Our bodies use a gyro-like mechanism in our ears which has 3 mutually orthogonal inertial measurement devices. Modern motion processors use something called an Inertial Measurment Unit (IMU). These devices provide movement data which can be used to compensate for the movement. Chickens apparently have the same type mechanism only with a higher update rate.
*Update* The chickens were eaten by the family dog. WHOOPS! :(

Summary: I collected data at the carnival for a full day. Then I used that information to figure out which games are the biggest scams using science to analyze them and show you how to beat them. I also figured out how much the carnival actually pays for the prizes so even if you win, you lose. And then I visited the carnival with my professional baseball playing buddy to dominate all the games. It worked well.

ELI20 version: I answered why you want a large outlet area but not necessarily why it curves like that. Anytime you have a sudden change in cross-sectional area in the horn you will get waves reflecting back at the source. You don't want that because that is wasted energy that could have moved forward. Even if it goes from a small cross-section to a larger, if you do it suddenly you get those wasted waves. So you want the horn to basically be asymptotic at the exit so you never have a jump in discontinuity when it exits to the wide open air. So a directors cone isn't as good as the curved shapes I showed because it still has the sudden change when it dumps into the open air.

Are you ticklish? Dr Emily Grossman shows you how to use the science of tickling to stop yourself squirming when you're tickled.
Subscribe for regular science videos: http://bit.ly/RiSubscRibe
Why do we feel ticklish? Why does it make us laugh? It’s hard to pin down a scientific definition – or explanation – of tickling. It’s a complex phenomenon, involving a range of sensory and neurological elements, which means it’s hard to identify why it evolved. Is it socially significant? Or an alarm system, warning us of things crawling on our skin?
Why can’t you tickle yourself? Dr Emily Grossman explains how your brain anticipates the movement of your hands, and suppresses the tickle response. Can you use the fact that you can't tickle yourself to stop other people being able to tickle you?
Dr Emily Grossman, science presenter and educator www.emilygrossman.co.uk @DrEmilyGrossman
Dr. Emily Grossman is an expert in molecular biology and genetics, with a Triple First in Natural Sciences from Queens' College Cambridge and a PhD in cancer research. She also trained and worked as an actress, and now combines her skills in her work as a science broadcaster and educator; teaching maths and all three sciences at all academic levels and explaining science for a wide range of TV and radio programmes. She recently completed a season as resident science expert on ITV's The Alan Titchmarsh Show, and was a member of the panel of experts for two series of Sky1's celebrity panel show Duck Quacks Don't Echo, hosted by Lee Mack. She has appeared as a science expert on ITV's This Morning, Channel 4’s Food Unwrapped, Sky News, BBC1's The One Show, and London Live’s Not the One Show, has been interviewed several times on Radio 4’s Last Word, Radio 5 live’s Daily Bacon, BBC World Service’s Newshour and LBC Radio, and is a regular guest on the Guardian Science Weekly podcast.
Emily has hosted science events for the Academy of Medical Sciences and at the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh, she has run workshops and given talks for The Royal Institution, she has performed at Science Showoff at the Bloomsbury Theatre, and she has presented many interactive science shows in schools and at science festivals. She is also a communication skills trainer for the Famelab International science communication competition - running master-classes for competition finalists across the globe - and is a judge for the Institute of Ideas Debating Matters Competition. Emily has taught science and maths at two London schools and the Manchester Science Museum, and has tutored over 150 private students. Chris Cornell was a brilliant singer, songwriter, and arranger, and in honor of his passing, we'd like to take a look at one of his most famous songs, Black Hole Sun. Described by Cornell as a "surreal dreamscape" and by Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil as "not safe as milk but [not] glass in someone's eye, either", Black Hole Sun is a disorienting but moving piece that uses some pretty advanced harmonic devices in some very clever ways. Chris Cornell's passing was a great tragedy for the world of music, and his legacy lives on through his many works of art. Rest in Peace, Chris Cornell.

"I’m designating the Stonewall National Monument as the newest addition to America’s national parks system. Stonewall will be our first national monument to tell the story of the struggle for LGBT rights. I believe our national parks should reflect the full story of our country – the richness and diversity and uniquely American spirit that has always defined us. That we are stronger together. That out of many, we are one." - President Barack Obama
On June 24, 2016 President Obama designated the site of the Stonewall uprising and birthplace of the modern LGBT civil rights movement the “Stonewall National Monument.” This new monument is a testament to the diversity, inclusiveness, and individual freedom that make America great.

Note that there's a huge amount about pi that I didn't cover in this video due to time - I didn't even mention proofs of it being irrational and transcendental, or why we call it pi! I chose to focus on the development of its approximation as a hook to teach the broader history of mathematics, rather than make this video an exhaustive list of facts. The wiki is a great place to learn more about the rest of the number's history and applications in maths and physics: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi#History
A few nitpicky things:
- I made mistakes distinguishing between 'digits of pi calculated' and 'decimal points of pi calculated' in some sections, so it is possible that this error is elsewhere without me knowing.
- Archimedes didn't do his approximation with squares, he started with hexagons and then increased the order of the polygon. I chose to present the zeroth order version of his algorithm using squares for simplicity, but note that this is not what he did.
- Something which got lost from the final version of this video is my argument that during the Age of Enlightenment pi shifted from being a physical (measured) constant to a purely logical (theoretical) one. This then embodies the philosophical shift in society at the time. This is hinted at but not fully explained, so I thought I'd put this here.
- Lastly, I am truly sorry for the pronunciations which I doubtlessly completely murdered in this video. At least I spared you my attempt at Chinese.
I am hugely indebted to Alex Bellos and his excellent book Alex's Adventures in Numberland for the inspiration to make this video. There is an entire chapter of the book devoted to a broader but shallower discussion of pi and its history, which I highly recommend.

We are all familiar with the most common form of the US military salute, a respective gesture from a military personnel raising her right hand to eye level. But many may not know where it comes from. In fact, the origins of the US military salute isn't a clear-cut case. Editor of Army Officer's Guide and Acting Secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission, Robert J. Dalessandro, shares his insight about the complicated history of the military salute. Following is a transcript of the video.
Robert J. Dalessandro: The origin of the military salute that we use in all the armed services of the United States is really shrouded in mystery. We really don't get a good look at what the quote, unquote customs, and traditions are until the Army spells them out around World War I.
In the Army, we say that the tradition certainly goes back to Roman times. If you've ever seen any of the Roman movies, the Romans would sometimes slap their chest and put their arm up in the air as a matter of salute. And they say that that salute had an origin to show allegiance from your heart and then to show that you didn't have a weapon in your fighting hand — that your hand was open and that you're a friend. That's one of the very early origin stories.
There's a second one. One is that in the times of the knight. A knight who saw a friendly knight or to pay tribute to a king would raise the visor of his helmet, to let that person see their face. And then, show an open hand, again that they didn't have a sword in their hand.
If you think about the act of grabbing the visor of your helmet and lifting it up to show your face, and you think about today's salute where the right arm is taken up and touches the brim of your headgear, helmet, or soft hat, that is very similar to this medieval era days of knights.
I would say those are the two most common origin stories of the salute. We know that all of these legends and myths that have been passed down to us on how the salute started — they have in common the idea of showing that you are not hostile to the person you're approaching, that you don't have a weapon in your hand, and that you are in fact a person that wants to speak with, and perhaps honor the person you are approaching.

We spent four days inside the United States Coast Guard's intense, eight-week basic training program in Cape May, New Jersey. Coast Guard recruits undergo an intense journey that’s heavy on both academic and physical challenges. What sets it apart are the brutal “smoke sessions,” where recruits are disciplined as a group for mistakes made by individuals in their respective companies. We were embedded at Training Center Cape May for four days, allowing us to see different companies at various stages of the program, culminating with the emotional graduation ceremony on the Friday of week eight.

Men and women are different. We are wired differently and tend to process information differently. While there is incredible variability among men as a group and among women as a group, there still tend to be some common and significant differences between these groups. These differences extend to how men and women experience mental health issues, including depression.

In 1995, the British Medical Journal published a report about a builder who accidentally jumped onto a nail, which pierced straight through his steel-toed boot. He was in such agonizing pain that any movement was unbearable. But when the doctors took off his boot, they discovered that the nail had never touched his foot at all. What’s going on? Joshua W. Pate investigates the experience of pain.

Hey all, Doctor Mike here! The prostate is a truly a misunderstood organ/gland. Not many people understand what the prostate does or what the prostate is. What makes the issue even more complex is what can go wrong with it. Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) or enlarged prostate is a common condition that affects millions of lives. BPH treatments have several approaches that I discuss in this video. Prostate cancer is the number one cancer in men and not many people know the prostate cancer symptoms or the prostate cancer treatments. I'm sure many of you have heard of a prostate exam but not everyone knows the evidence behind it. The Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test is also very common but is not as good as you may think in extending or improving life.
I hope you enjoy my breakdown of this complex but important topic!
