Marketing For Photographers is my new series of videos designed to help you navigate social media, build a great photography website, establish a solid pricing structure and increase your photography business.

This video is about the social part of social media for photographers.

By being social and participating in conversations and sharing knowledge I am able to increase my social currency. Social Currency is important because without it - you are just shouting and nobody is listening.

How do you build social currency for your photography business? Start with GREAT Photographs. That doesn't mean that if you're a beginner you can't post… it simply means only post your best. There is nothing worse than the photographer that posts 20 images of the same shot. Only one of them is the best which means all of the others aren't! So don't post them.

Provide CONTENT and CONTEXT. It is not enough to just post an image. Tell a story. Give some background. Sell it! Don't kid yourself into thinking that people actually care about your photography. If they aren't the person in the photo - they don't care about your photography unless you give them a reason to. If you are a portrait or wedding photographer, when you post the image, talk about how much fun you had with the subject, how wonderful the wedding was, or how thrilled you are that you had a chance to spend time with this wonderful person…. Comments like this make prospective customers think you are actually a nice person and would be fun to work with.

Be consistent. Post on a regular basis. I would encourage you to post a minimum of twice a week on every social media platform that you are involved with. It doesn't always have to be pictures. It could be a cool quote, a link to an interesting article, it could be a short story about an experience or a thought that you had. If you are using social media to build your business this is extremely important and in the next video, I will give you some info on tools that will help you automatically generate content for your posts.

Social Engagement. Make sure you reply to all comments and messages. Start conversations. Ask for opinions and feedback. I try to respond to every single comment someone leaves me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. At a minimum, I am sure to like the comment. Here on YouTube, I respond with a comment on each and every comment that is left on my videos.

The first hack I have for you, and this works for all social sites, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, if you respond to every single comment, you're gonna get more engagement.

The second tip I have for you is specific to LinkedIn. Whenever you're writing your descriptions, so let's say you're sharing content, or something from your website on LinkedIn, keep your sentences very short.

The third tip I have for you is don't just promote your business. Everyone's like, "Yeah, I want sales from Facebook. "I want sales from LinkedIn. "I'm just going to start promoting "my products and services." Well if you keep doing that, and you're not being social, because that's the whole purpose of these social sites is to be social, you're going to find that your reach is going to tank, and no one's going to see your content, like, or engage with it.

The fourth tip is to leverage stories on Instagram and Facebook. They get so much engagement. What I like doing is sharing stories multiple times a day. Not just one or two stories but like 10, 12, 13. And even on Instagram what you can do that's really cool is that you're sharing stories. You can tell people to swipe up. Gary V. does this a ton. When he has a podcast or a blog post, he's like, "Swipe up, swipe up." It gets so much more engagement. That way his podcast is getting more downloads, people are going more to his site, he's getting more conversion and sales. It's a simple hack; it works well. And if you do multiple updates to your story each and every single day, it gives you more opportunities to get people to swipe up.

The fifth tip I have for you is cross promote your social profiles. You're not just on Facebook. You're not just on LinkedIn. You're on all of them, or at least you're on the major ones. So tell all your Twitter fans or followers to follow you on Facebook. Tell your Facebook people to follow you on Twitter. Tell your people on LinkedIn to check out your Twitter and your Facebook and your Instagram, and do that vice versa with all your profiles.

The sixth tip I have for you is to use exit popup. You know why I leverage exit popups? It's one of the highest converting things you can do. Someone's going to leave your site, might as well create that last ditch effort to get 'em to convert. And I don't recommend doing it on mobile. I would recommend doing it just for desktop. If you want to do it on mobile, I would recommend that you wait at least 30 seconds before you show it because it's too hard to detect when they're going to leave your site.

The last tip I have for you is to test out video. Social platforms love video. So if you create video, you're giving them more potential eyeballs instead of the television networks. That's why companies like Netflix and Hulu, they're pushing so much on paid content. Everyone, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and all these social sites want that video content. So consider creating because when you do, you're going to get more engagement.

One of the most powerful marketing tools a small business can use is social media. Social media is globally-accessible platforms, websites and mobile applications through which people communicate and share content with one another.

Social media uses tools that allow users to ‘share’ or send the content they see on a site to their friends and family, often by just clicking a button.

Sharing makes social media the ultimate, many-to-many marketing tool with the ability to spread content at warp speed. Let’s look at five ways that social media can be used to drive business.

First, you can use social media to connect with customers and prospects at a global level, with a personal touch. When you connect with customers on social media, you want to create conversations with and between them that make them want to come back – you create fans or followers of your social media site.

To create a conversation, for example, a clothing boutique might start by sharing pics of a new fashion trend on Instagram, and ask followers to post selfies wearing the trend.

Second, you can use social media to build your brand. When you use your social media sites to share content that reflects your businesses’ personality, insights, and passions, you give your business a unique voice, distinguishing yourself and your brand, from your competitors.

A local gym, for example, might build their brand by posting motivational quotes or pictures daily on their Twitter feed.

Third, you can use social media to drive traffic to your website. While not all of the content you share on social media will link back to your site, some will. Sharing an interesting blog post or new product announcement can excite your target audience and send them on to your website for more.

For instance, a bath and body shop might announce their new spring scents on their Facebook page and include a promotional code for a discount customers can use to purchase from their website.

Fourth, you can use social media to establish your expertise. When you share your knowledge and know-how, you can build a following — an audience that comes to see you as a thought leader. As you build your audience, your influence grows.

To establish his expertise as a florist, a designer might post a video on YouTube demonstrating how he makes centerpieces for winter weddings.

Fifth, you can use social media to increase sales. Ultimately, all of these activities — connecting, brand building, driving traffic, establishing expertise —lead to the same place: sales.

The bottom line is that social media for business has the potential to affect your bottom line. Ready, set, get social!
