Changing careers can be incredibly intimidating, no matter your age. However, the longer you’re in a career path, the harder it can seem to break free of it in pursuit of another role. For some of you, it might even seem IMPOSSIBLE to jump into a new field.

The good news is, people successfully make career changes every day. And, with the right guidance, you can, too.

1. Showcase your transferable skills.

You might be thinking, “Why would anyone hire ME when I have no experience in this field?” But you probably have more skills than you think!

When you’re changing careers, taking advantage of your transferable skills is absolutely essential to your success.

Transferable skills are skill sets that apply to a wide variety of jobs. For example, project management, budgeting, and customer service are all transferable skills because you can use them in many different types of roles.

If you can prove that your skills can transfer to this job, you have the opportunity to get your foot in the door… even if you’ve never worked in that type of role before.

So, make sure you emphasize these skills in your resume and cover letter, and during your interviews.

2. Identify where you need to upskill.

When you change careers, you’ll need to upskill in some areas. After you’ve taken inventory of your transferable skills, figure out what you’re missing in terms of experience. Ask yourself, “What’s missing?”

Then, find a way to gain those skills. You can back to school, get certifications, attend industry training, and so on. There are so many resources out there that can help you acquire the skills you need to change careers.

3. Look to your network.

Networking is always important when it comes to job searching, but it’s especially important when you’re changing careers.

Remember, even though you have transferable skills that can help you land the role, you haven’t proven yourself in this new career path yet.

As a result, you need people on your side to help you out. Your network can help you meet key players in your target field, advocate for you, and give you advice that will help you move forward in this new career path.
