Is Photoshop Remixing the World? | Off Book | PBS Digital Studios

Photoshop has completely revolutionized our visual culture. Artists now use Photoshop to create complex imagery that would have been impossible 20 years ago. It has also profoundly changed the art of photo retouching, turning a labor intensive process into an artful and often controversial digital workflow. But possibly the most current and expressive influence can be seen in meme culture online. With the ability to alter any image in the media landscape, everyday people now have the means to critically comment on culture and spread their ideas
virally, leveling the playing field between traditional media creators and consumers. Photoshop has changed the way we communicate, the way we express ourselves, and the way we view the world and each other.

The credits are often the first thing we see when we watch a great film or TV show, but the complexity and artistry of title design is rarely discussed. Creators of title sequences are tasked to invent concepts that evoke the core story and themes of the production, and to create a powerful visual experience that pulls the viewer into the film's world. In this episode we hear the stories of some of the most inventive people working in the field, including the creators of the iconic Mad Men sequence, the hilarious Zombieland opening and "rules" sequences, and the stirring end credits from Blue Valentine.

Though often overlooked, Graphic Design surrounds us: it is the signs we read, the products we buy, and the rooms we inhabit. Graphic designers find beauty within limitations, working towards the ultimate goal of visually communicating a message, be it the packaging of a product, the spirit of a book, or the narrative of a building. Utilizing a language of type and imagery, graphic designers try to make every aspect of our lives defined and beautiful.

The Creativity of Indie Video Games | Off Book | PBS Digital Studios

The video game industry is now bigger than Hollywood, with hundreds of millions of dollars spent developing these interactive experiences. But there are also small-scale developers working in the indie game realm, creating unique and experimental video games without the budgets of the larger "AAA" games. These indie game developers devote time, money, and take great risks in a quest to realize their creative vision. They deftly balance game mechanics & systems, sound & visuals, and an immersive storytelling experience to push the gaming medium into revolutionary new territory. Much like indie music or indie film, the indie gaming movement provides a creative outlet for game designers who want to work outside of the mainstream.

00:02:15
GCFLearnFree
16 Views · 5 years ago

Sometimes, camera sensor dust or blemishes can be barely visible, with this quick trick, you'll be able to easily spot the spots in Photoshop non-destructively. It is essential to remove spots in Photoshop in the very beginning because you don't want to apply a lot of processing just to realize that there are some of them jumping out of the photo that needs to be removed. Also, removing any kind of spots after the fact can be destructive. Besides, you don't want to apply skin softening over blemishes, do you?

In this tutorial, we'll be using the curves adjustment layer in a funky way to make all those spots visible. Since it is an adjustment layer, after we have removed the spots, we can always turn it off or throw it away. Hope this video helps you.

Creativity is the result of toggling between two main modes of thought. So what exactly are these modes and how do we take the middle path? Kaufman is co-author of "Wired to Create: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Creative Mind" (http://goo.gl/HtqT5t).

Transcript - The way human evolution has worked is that humans are constantly toggling between two main modes of thought, a mode of thought where we're focused on the moment for survival issues, because if you miss like a saber-toothed tiger coming after you and you're daydreaming you're not going to be daydreaming much longer, do you know what I'm saying? But, we also have this other really important mode of thought on the downtime when we don't have to be vigilant about our environment where we're constantly planning for the future. Our brain has evolved to toggle between two main modes of thought, the moment processing and future planning. That's actually what - the planning part is actually what makes humans uniquely human because other animals have a hard time transcending the present moment. So we're constantly toggling between these two things. And I would argue that for optimal creativity you need to strike a balance; you need to come to what we call the middle way. And in the middle way is knowing when it's contextually appropriate to pay attention to the present environment for survival, as well as gathering information, and allow yourself when that isn't necessary to dip into your inner stream of consciousness and plan for your future. Two critical brain networks that are involved in this toggling process between the present moment and our future planning is the default mode network, which I like to refer to as the imagination network because all the kinds of processes associated with this of brain network I think are associated with imagination in someway. From like prospective the taking, and when I'm taking the perspective of someone else I'm imagining what that person is thinking, right? To daydreaming, to thinking about the future, you know, the future planning. It's all imagination. A lot of it has to do with social imagination, a particular kind of imagination but I think it's definitely having to do with imagination. And the other major brain network is the executive attention network.

Executive attention network is really crucial for working memory, such as holding information in your mind and consciousness and processing and manipulating it, as well as focusing on the outside world. It's also important, by the way, for focusing on your inner world. So you can be a mindful daydreamer, and when you're a mindful daydreamer both of those brain networks actually couple together because you're focusing that limited spotlight of attention inward and so your daydreams might become more focused when these two brain networks are collaborating with each other. So these brain networks are all not always at odds with each other. There is a unique state of consciousness when both of those networks are on the same level of the seesaw. Right? And that seems to be creativity. Really, really expert meditators have been shown to have an amazing executive attention network. They're really, really amazing at being able to focus, but that doesn't necessarily relate to creativity. You could be the greatest most proficient meditator in the universe and not have one iota of creativity. I think that's the honest truth. I go to some of these conferences, you can go to some of these mindfulness conferences and they're all just like zombies like looking at paying attention to the speaker and you look at them and they're all so laser focused on the speaker because they've honed their mindful attention. And it drives me crazy sometimes because I just want to scream daydream! Like it's okay! Like to go back in and make meaning out of that experience and then go back out. It's that toggling process that creators are really good at. So I wouldn't make a case that I think too extreme in either direction, either too extreme daydreamers, and there are chronic daydreamers, they need help. A lot of them like see psychiatrists because they can't stop daydreaming. And I think on the other end it too we can become a too mindful society where we lose fact of the importance of dipping back in to create meaning out of that outer world that we're mindful of.

You think you love music? You have nothing on the Ancient Greek obsession. Every aspect of Greek life was punctuated by song: history, poetry, theater, sports and even astronomy. In fact, music was so important to Greek philosopher Plato that he claimed the music we listen to directly affects our ethics. Tim Hansen wonders what Plato might have to say about the music we listen to today.

First there was the industrial revolution. Then there was the information revolution. Now, says Cartoon Network president Christina Miller, we must prepare for the creativity revolution. It's an imperative both for individuals looking for their place in the new economy, and for companies creating products for new generations—digital natives who expect a seamless experience of digital products. That's an intimidating demand if you're not a digital native yourself, so Miller suggests that companies actively listen to their audience, and even turn to them for fresh ideas.

CHRISTINA MILLER: So screen time—I think a lot of people do different things on their screens at this point.

So it is a little bit of a traditional point of “Hey, too much screen time is bad for you,” because—at least for people my age you think of that meaning too much TV.

So it’s about there being choice and control of what that screen time is.

So: are you playing games? Are you watching content? Are you creating stuff? Is it a passive experience? Is it an active experience?

When things work best you’re also able to connect the digital to the physical, so I think that there’s a large gray area now between too much screen time.

It just needs to be defined a bit better. Do you mean too much of a passive watching experience, or do you mean the ability to do a lot of different things to be empowered, to create, to be given tools for creative expression, to be problem-solving and collaborative while being entertained?

I think if it’s that latter, you’d find people saying right at the age we serve (which is the generally six plus), that there is I think more good than bad—if in fact it’s an active, immersive experience as opposed to a one-way passive experience.

We call them plurals. We’ve done a lot of generational research as an overall for Turner, and that was the term that I guess we collectively—obviously Time Warner as an organization—had coined very early on before they were called Generation Z, which I think in fairness is a little less descriptive and it just comes from “Hey we were Generation Y, we were Generation X, so you just go down the alphabet.”

But a lot of people have different names, plurals because of the plurality of the way they consume content and everything they do.

If millennials needed lists because they didn’t come of age—truly the information revolution was happening around them and they needed help filters sorting things out—this generation doesn’t.

They are really comfortable with choice and they actually want to control it. And if you don’t move quick enough for them, like Thomas Friedman, Thank You for Being Late, if you don’t move quick enough for them they just move onto the next thing, because they realize that they have a whole lot of choice and they want to control that.

So I think the plurality of everything available to them is more indicative than just a letter.

So, Cartoon Network focuses really on creative confidence and this core belief that we have an obligation to raise the next generation of creators, makers and innovators. So if you believe that there was an industrial revolution, an information revolution, we believe that the next one is all about creativity—that if there was a time where people were referring to “geeks inheriting the earth,” well I think the whole-brain thinkers and the creative folks will really be the ones that supercharge innovation in the future.

And making sure the kids know that, if you learn things like coding and computer science, that it doesn’t just mean “engineer” or “programmer,” but it can mean “animator”, “video game developer”, it can mean learning skills for self-expression that will help you through the rest of your life.

I grew up in Generation X over here, I grew up and I was always told that team sports really helped you in the future so it built better leaders, it helped you with working in a larger team.

If you believe that, and there’s definitely some truth to it, but if you apply that to things like coding and giving kids creative tools to learn self-expression, that ability to solve problems—to work collaboratively, to create and make—will serve them and ready them for anything that comes next, not just necessarily to “hey, be an animator.”

Photoshop Quick Tip: Undo Layer Visibility
00:03:11
GCFLearnFree
13 Views · 5 years ago

By default, turning the visibility of the layer on and off does not count in history actions in Photoshop, i.e. you cannot undo them. In this video, we are going to learn how to enable undo layer visibility so that it becomes possible for you to check different compositions, try out different background and foreground elements by turning the layer on and off and also the ability to go back steps at the same time.

It gets problematic and cumbersome especially if you are working on composites with a large number of layers. In these cases, you might have to turn off and turn on certain layers and see how a particular object, image or text looks with or without that layer. In the procedure, you might turn on and off a dozen layers and if you want to go back to the initial stage, recollecting which layers were turned on and which were off is a hard nut to crack. You have no choice but to remember them. In the process, you again might kill a lot of time figuring out how it was before. Why? You just cannot Undo it. Layer visibility by default does not count as Undo.

That's what we are going to solve in this video. After getting this thing right, you will never ever have a problem working with composites!

A profile of Wim Crouwel: the Dutch graphic designer
00:03:56
GCFLearnFree
7 Views · 5 years ago

"For me it is always a question of thinking before sketching," explains Wim Crouwel, the Dutch graphic designer. "A design ripens in my head, and then I see it more or less in front of me, before I take a pencil and do it on paper".

Phaidon.com caught up with Crouwel in Utrecht at Schröder House - designed by Gerrit Rietveld, a name that was familiar to Crouwel as a student at art school (and who would later become an acquaintance).

In a career spanning more than 60 years, Crouwel discusses how he was influenced by the Swiss design movement of the 1950s and how he became a graphic designer, known to his friends as 'grid-nick': "I developed a kind of grid in which my design would take shape. It's very architectural because I'm influenced as much by architecture as by other graphic designers and artists."

Watch more How to Have a Career in Graphic Design videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/....509233-Become-a-Grap

So you don't want to necessarily go to school, but you do want to become a designer? One of the biggest things that you need to do is learn exactly what it takes to become a designer, or even what type of designer that you want to be.

There are many different resources out there now, from Smashing Magazine to just looking up on Dribble different designers that are out there, seeing what it is that they're doing. Are you interested in packaging? Are you interested in website design? Mobile application design? Or maybe you have your eyes set on a particular company that you know that you want to work at.

One of the biggest things that helped me when I was coming out of school, and I probably didn't even need school to do it, was to go on informational interviews. It's very easy to ask different creative directors or principals of companies to tell them, "Hey, listen, I'm interested in becoming a web designer," or, "I'm interested in web design". Maybe you have a portfolio and you can show them, and they'll basically let you know through the informational interview what more skills you need to be hired there, if you're not going to be hired there already.

The good thing about that is that not only do you get information as to what you need to secure and land a job, or how much more work that you need to do, but you also gain a contact and a network, and that person knows a lot of people and the people they know know a lot of people. So, a lot of the jobs I received were from word of mouth, because I interviewed with them, or I had a talk with them. They didn't have work for me then, or they followed up with me to make sure that I was growing as a designer while having my portfolio on Behance or Coroflot or Krop, and in doing so kept an eye out on me and then referred me to other people.

So, your best bet is to get out there, know exactly what is is that you want to do, and try to meet as many people as you can, and make as many networks as you can.

Wesley Taylor | Graphic Designer (Documentary)
00:06:00
GCFLearnFree
11 Views · 5 years ago

Wesley Taylor is a graphic designer living in Detroit. He's not in Detroit because it needs him, he's there because of the city's long legacy of making, and it fits him well.

For Wes, everything lives, dies and moves in the moment. All projects are informed by previous ones, cannibalized and turned into new works that only get bigger from there. He's doing so many things at once he has no choice but to live in the work that he makes. And it's right where he wants to be. Collaboration comes second nature to Wes, and to him, it's the way it should be. Wes's current collaborations include Talking Dolls and Complex Movements.

A Day in the Life of a Graphic Designer | Graphic Design

Watch more How to Have a Career in Graphic Design videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/....509231-A-Day-in-the-

So a day in the life of a designer or even an art director or even a creative director; what does that look like? Whether you're a freelancer that's traveling from different agencies or whether you're an independent contractor that's at home and you set your own schedule, or whether you are being managed by a multitude of people and you're a production designer, every day looks different, no matter what job you do.

You may be working on one project for three days in a row or maybe even a month in row, or you may be working on nothing for a week if you're an independent contractor, and you're wondering "Where's my next dollar going to come from?" The feast of famine. The way that my day works is very... It goes all over the place. Because I have a lot of clients on the West Coast, I don't get up until 11:00, so I usually get up and then I check my to-do list for the day, that I usually set the day before.

Then I'll check base camp to see if there's any pressing to-do list items for me. I'll check email and try to do an inbox zero. I only try to check my email twice a day. I think that's important for anybody, whether you're in the office or out, to cut down on the amount of distractions that you can. Because those that are in the creative field are more prone to have problems with attention, so you have to make sure that you set these systems in place to have a day that's a little structured.

Days of designers are not really structured at all and it can be very taxing, but also very exciting if you don't like mundane, and then also, if you're an independent contractor you have to find your own clients. You have to figure out what type of campaign am I going to do today or what networking event am I going to do today? Who am I going to meet? What am I going to say? What work am I going to work on? So it's really up in the air as to how each part of your day will go, but it's always an exciting one and at the end of it, you still feel like you haven't done enough.

The part that I really hone in on the most, is project and time management. Because our brains are wired in a couple different ways. One, you can't do two things at once, you can't multitask. No matter how many times we can convince ourselves that we can, we can't. Then the second thing is that even though you may like to do something different every day, your brain craves structure. So it's one of those things where "Okay, I have to decide what days do I want to do this? What days am I going to look for clients? What days am I going to actually do work?"

One of the things that I had to figure out was how much money do I need to make in a month and how many hours does it take for me to do that? Once I came up with that magic number - let's say it's four hours a day, four days a week, so that leaves a lot of time to do a whole lot of other stuff that could get me clients. That I could use to get myself more organized. I could become more healthy. I could become more social.

So I use a lot of different tools to make sure that I'm spending the right amount of time on certain things. I use Harvest as a time tracking tool, which also allows me to bill my clients straight from the platform. I use AnyDO, which is on Android and iPhone and a Google Chrome extension, that allows you to make a to-do list for today, tomorrow, this week and later. So it allows you to put it in four different areas, so as to not fill up a whole year of things that you need to do, because you can easily become overwhelmed.

Another good thing to know about the brain, that's taken from the GTD method on getting things done, is that your brain needs to empty itself out often. So even if you're not going to do it today, let's say "Oh, no I really want to make a T-shirt that says 'Smart Guy' on it, so I'm going to write that down. So that my brain isn't thinking about what that T-shirt's going to look like." So there's different tools and methods and again everything works differently on everyone.

But once you find that sweet spot; and it's not going to be overnight and it probably won't even be a year; you're going to be continually changing, but you just have to be patient with yourself and then also appreciate, like the project management process and time management process of others that are like you in your community.

Transcript - Implicit learning is this ability to subconsciously soak up the probabilistic structure of the universe to put it in a very technical term. Basically it's our ability, you know, there's constantly patterns going on in our environment, even social situations there's constant patterns of people were talking to, just in nature there are patterns. And I found this ability to subconsciously implicitly learn these things without our awareness was related to a very important part of creativity, which is called openness experience.

People who are more open to their experiences tended to do better on these implicit learning tasks where they've had to subconsciously learn the rule structure or learn the pattern without their awareness. They were learning the pattern. So intuition is an important part of the creative process. I don't believe that - there's this kind of false dichotomy we've made between rationality and intuition. So again, the common theme today is the middle way because you go to a bookstore, you look at different sections of the bookstore, you look at like the rationality section and it's like Dawkins and everyone God is dead blah, blah, blah and you're like whatever you do don't rely your intuition; intuition is BS.

And then you go to like the spirituality section of the bookstore and it's like every thing is like intuition, intuition, intuition, rational people don't know they're talking about; they're not in touch with spirituality, et cetera, et cetera. And I think there needs to be a middle section of the bookstore which says that for optimal truth in the universe, not just discovering the truth but also optimal creativity, we need to listen to our intuition but not be ruled by our intuition. We need to be rational but we need not be hyper rational. And I think that that middle way is really critical for creativity.

The non-conscious mind computes so many things outside of our level of awareness that are related to creativity that if we don't give our subconscious mind the time to really reflect and to fill in all the gaps between all these things we are actually reducing the chances we're going to have a great insight. Great creativity doesn't come when we're just solely rationally consciously focusing on solving a creative problem. That's helpful for solving a non-insightful problem, but when we're trying to solve an insightful problem, something that requires a leap to come to an answer, we rarely get to that answer when we're consciously deliberately focusing on the answer. We need to go do something else and let the subconscious mind work.

And then when we feel that intuition what William James refers to the fringe of consciousness where we start to feel it bubbling up in our soul that there's an answer coming and it's a very exciting feeling, that fringe of consciousness, eventually when it reaches the threshold of awareness that's what the ah-ha moment is. So we can sort of – the research shows we start to feel that an ah-ha moment is coming and then when an ah-ha moment comes it pops into consciousness as one gestalt, as one whole piece. Because that's what our subconscious has been doing is trying to fill in all those little missing pieces so that finally when it enters our consciousness we only see it as one big gestalt. Now it doesn't mean it's always right however. The feeling that we get on the ah-ha moment is that feeling of completeness, but it might not be right so we still have to do the hard work of rationality to flesh it out.

Why do we need creativity?
00:01:57
GCFLearnFree
12 Views · 5 years ago

The word, "Creativity", in our society has mistakenly been limited to artistic endeavors, but it also encompasses essential parts of everyday life -- divergent thinking, problem solving, and innovation. Whether it's a professional navigating office politics or a child figuring out how to reach a cookie on the kitchen counter, creativity is essential. "We all have creative potential," says Mark Runco, Ph.D., director of the University of Georgia's Torrance Center for Creativity & Talent Development. "Our job as parents and teachers is to help kids fulfill it." Now whether that potential is being fulfilled is another story entirely.

Kyung Hee Kim, Ph.D., an educational psychologist at the College of William & Mary, in Virginia, spent the past decade studying the creativity in more than 300,000 students in the U.S. from Kindergarten to the 12th grade. The news is not good: "Creativity scores have significantly decreased since 1990," she says. Moreover, "creativity scores for kindergartners through third-graders decreased the most, and those from the fourth through sixth grades decreased by the next largest amount." This is especially concerning as it stunts abilities which are supposed to mature over a lifetime.

Furthermore, our education system is currently not positioned to curb this trend. Due to the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001, many schools have eliminated courses for subject areas and activities not directly aligned to the NCLB's accountability standards for Federal funding. Significantly more time is spent preparing for standardized exams focused on specific core subjects, including Math, English and Science, and less time supporting creative, child-driven learning.

As a result, in the U.S., music and the arts, widely understood as building blocks for enhancing creativity, among other skills, are considered peripheral activities more appropriate for a few talented students rather than the masses. This is in stark contrast with countries, like Hungary, Japan, and the Netherlands, that consistently rank among the highest in math and science test scores. These countries have long adopted mandates for arts and music education programs.

Studies have also found that the benefits of creativity have lasting effects that are important when children age and enter their professional career tracks. IBM's 2010 Global CEO Study, consisting of in-person interviews with over 1,500 CEOs from 60 countries and 33 industries, uncovered that in this current world plagued with increasing complexities, CEOs believe that creativity trumps all other leadership qualities, including rigor, management discipline, integrity or even vision.

Employees feel similarly, as creativity is regarded as one of the top 3 personality traits most important to career success. On the contrary, 78% of those surveyed in an Adobe Systems study of college-educated employees wish they had more creative ability.

Or ... does it? if you're like most people you’d probably be paralyzed by this task. Why? Brandon Rodriguez explains how creative constraints actually help drive discovery and innovation.

We Need a Bigger Definition of Creativity

Our definition of creativity is too small. In this illustrated video, I share some thoughts on bigger definition of creativity. Enjoy this video? Please subscribe to the channel: http://bit.ly/spencervideos

Here's the transcript:

When you the word “creative,” you might think of a painter
or a playwright or an author or a photographer or a filmmaker or a chef. In other words, you might think of people who make things.

I think it’s what we mean when we use a label like “creative type.” But there is no such thing as a creative type. We are all creative. Every one of us. We just need a bigger definition of creativity.

Yes, creativity involves making things. But it can also mean mashing up ideas in innovative ways. It can mean geeking out on data and finding unique solutions to practical problems. It can mean hacking systems and tweaking things in unusual ways. It can mean exploring ideas and navigating information until you become an expert curator.

It can mean designing systems that empower the creative work of others. It can mean creating change in the world by speaking truth and leading movements and interacting with people.
See, each of these creative approaches shape our world in profound ways.

And the more we see the creativity all around us, the more we are able to appreciate the creativity inside of ourselves.

This monumental, multi-paneled work declares Basquiat’s arrival as a fully matured artistic force at the thrilling apex of his powers.
