Strategic means affecting all business functions. The strategic role of operations management is to contribute to the direction and plan of the business. The main goal of business is to minimise costs to maximise profits. A strategic role of operations is the management of costs. The different operations costs for a business are: Input costs, Labour costs, Processing costs, Inventory costs, Quality management. • Cost leadership aims to have the lowest costs and be the most prices competitive in the market. The business must still be profitable. Operations Management therefore must find ways to reduce costs in production. Example: Bunnings. A business can cut costs by increasing the scale/size of the business. How? By buying in bulk, the business is able to negotiate lower costs per unit. Goods/service differentiation: Tangible – they can be seen and touched. Tend to be standardised. Can be owned and transferred between people. Can take considerable time between production and consumption. Easy to determine costs by calculating inputs and adding margin. Services: Intangible. Generally customised. Cannot be owned. Production and consumption occurs at the same time. The value of a service depends on what the consumer is prepared to pay. Product Differentiation. Operations must find a way to distinguish their products from their competitors. This gives them a competitive advantage. This will differ between goods and services. Product Differentiation: Goods. Varying the actual product features. Operations search for ways to make their product features attractive to the consumer. Varying product quality. Making a low quality alternative to attract a different group of consumers. Varying the augmented features. This refers to add-ons or additional benefits. Product Differentiation: Services. Varying the amount of time spent on a service. Example: Hair salons. Varying the level of expertise brought to a service. Some service providers will offer a higher level of expertise. Varying the qualifications and experience of the service provider. This can be an important factor when consumers are choosing their service provider. Varying the quality of materials/ technology used in service delivery. Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). Medical technologies. Cross Branding: Operations may choose to offer consumers added benefits from a cross-branding arrangement.

Operations management is an area of management concerned with designing and controlling the process of production and redesigning business operations in the production of goods or services. It involves the responsibility of ensuring that business operations are efficient in terms of using as few resources as needed and effective in terms of meeting customer requirements. It is concerned with managing the process that converts inputs (in the forms of raw materials, labor, and energy) into outputs (in the form of goods and/or services).[1] The relationship of operations management to senior management in commercial contexts can be compared to the relationship of line officers to highest-level senior officers in military science. The highest-level officers shape the strategy and revise it over time, while the line officers make tactical decisions in support of carrying out the strategy. In business as in military affairs, the boundaries between levels are not always distinct; tactical information dynamically informs strategy, and individual people often move between roles over time.

According to the United States Department of Education, operations management is the field concerned with managing and directing the physical and/or technical functions of a firm or organization, particularly those relating to development, production, and manufacturing. Operations management programs typically include instruction in principles of general management, manufacturing and production systems, factory management, equipment maintenance management, production control, industrial labor relations and skilled trades supervision, strategic manufacturing policy, systems analysis, productivity analysis and cost control, and materials planning
إدارة العمليات Operations Management تُعنى بكل العمليات التي تؤدي إلى تحويل مدخلات إلى منتجات أو خدمات مفيدة لمستهلك أو مستخدم ما. إدارة العمليات تشمل إدارة الخدمات مثل المطاعم وشركات النقل والخدمات المالية والمحلات والفنادق، وتشمل كذلك إدارة التصنيع مثل المصانع المختلفة. كل مؤسسة تقوم بعمليات لإنتاج منتج أو تقديم خدمة وهذه العمليات تتفاعل مع الوظائف الأساسية الأخرى مثل التمويل والتسويق والموارد البشرية. أمثلة العمليات: تصنيع سيارة في مصنع السيارات، العملية التعليمية في جامعة، إعداد وتقديم الطعام في المطعم.العمليات تشمل العمليات الإنتاجية الأساسية والمساعدة فهي تشمل عمليات الشراء، التخزين، النقل الداخلي، التصنيع (التحويل)، نقل المنتج النهائي أو تقديم الخدمة للعميل
إدارة العمليات تعالج عدة مواضيع وهي
أ- تحديد الاهداف الاستراتيجية للعمليات مثل الجودة وسرعة تلبية طلبات العميل وانخفاض التكلفة والمروتة
ب- تصميم المنتج أو الخدمة بحيث تكون مقبولة من العملاء وبحيث يكون السعر مناسبا
ت- تخطيط / تخطيط نظام الإنتاج / الخدمة بجيث يتم تحقيق الأهداف الاستراتيجية للعمليات وذلك يشمل تخطيط مواقع العمل بالتخطيط المناسب
ث- تصميم العمل وتنظيمه بحيث يتم تقليل الفواقد في العملية الإنتاجية من وقت وجهد وخامات وموارد
ج- اختيار التكنولوجيا المناسبة
ح- إدارة الجودة بحيث يتم الوصول إلى معدلات الجودة المطلوبة وبحيث يحقق المنتج الجودة من وجهة نظر العميل
خ- تخطيط الإنتاجية اليومية والشهرية والسنوية
د- اختيار موقع (مواقع) الإنتاج مع الاخذ في الاعتبار نقل المواد الخام ونقل المنتجات
ذ- إدارة المخزون بحيث يتم تحديد الكميات المطلوبة من كل بند وزمن تقييم هذا الاحتياج والكمية المثلى للطلب الواحد بحيث يتم تقليل التكلفة الكلية
ر- إدارة المشتريات - إدارة سلسلة الإمداد وهذا يشمل اختيار الموردين وتقييمهم والعلاقت طويلة الأجل مع الموردين وتحديد ما يتم تصنيعه داخليا وما يسند إلى موردين ودراسة أسلوب توريد المواد المختلفة
ز- إدارة المشروعات وذلك بشمل إدارة الموازنة والجدول الزمني والموارد
س- تطوير العمليات وذلك بالتطوير المستمر أو بتحليل العمليات الحالية ودراسة سُبُل إعادة تصميمها
ش- إدارة طوابير الانتظار بحيث يتم تقليلها إلى المستوى المقبول وبحيث يتم تحسين ظروف الانتظار
إدارة العمليات تستخدم العديد من الأدوات لتحليل العمليات واتخاذ القرارات مثل المحاكاة والبرمجة الخطية وعلم اتخاذ القرار أو بحوث العمليات والتحاليل الكمية والإحصائية وتحليل المشاكل
